ADVISE! Reg. image analysis

Hello, fellow Neuromatchers,
I have few questions regarding Image feature extraction. If I am provided with 2-D, gray scale images and I want to extract following features fro the image where can I start:

  1. Curvature - average curvature of the object in the image?
  2. Contrast- Can I classify the images based on the level of contrast and how?
  3. What are the other features which I can look for in the image?

All suggestions and feedback is welcome.
