Announcing movement - a new package for the analysis of body movements in neuroscience

We’d like to introduce movement, a free and open-source Python :snake: package for analysing body movements, designed to aid the study of animal behaviour in neuroscience.

Deep Learning-based pose estimation tools, have revolutionised the study of animal behaviour, but there is no standardised, user-friendly approach for analysing the pose tracks that these tools generate.

movement offers a unified interface for analysing data from multiple major pose estimation frameworks and aims to consolidate common analysis workflows in animal behaviour research into one package. We are currently focusing on functionalities for data cleaning, kinematics, and interactive visualisation.

That said, the project is in early development phase :building_construction: and many cool features are still underway. See the project’s scope and roadmap for more info and stay tuned! We chose to advertise early, because we’d like to invite community feedback and contributions :hugs: to shape the project’s future direction.

Here’s how you can join the movement:

  • Visit our website, where you can explore our existing features through examples.
  • Chat with us on Zulip or open an issue on GitHub for specific bug reports and feature requests.
