how different frequencies (theta, alpha, beta, …) builds different brain state? and how it is related to different functions?

Thank you @zova137 for posting this question here. As we record eeg activity from different brain areas we interpret brain states in terms of different frequency bands (alpha, beta, gamma, mu). For example motor activity is seen in mu band. I wanted to ask how these states are informative of different brain function and why particular frequency band is associated with specific function? Or does brain try to isolate functions using these brain states?
