We are seeing that in some cases (13/167 subjects) FreeSurfer is labeling the central sulcus incorrectly in at least one hemisphere (see example below).
We have checked the segmentations and alignments for all subjects and they all look correct. We think this is may be happening at the stage of normalization (fsaverage?) and something about these people’s gyral anatomy is causing FreeSurfer to grab the two gyri set one back from the pre/postcentral ones. In one case, this is happening twice for the same subject who participated in two independent projects (i.e., we find this issue with different T1s and Freesurfer runs).
It looks like this error is messing with the mapping of the functional data, as the whole motor network maps are shifted forward, as would be expected from the mislabeling.
We are wondering if other groups have identified this issue and that someone knows how to fix it.
We have not found other NeuroStars on this issue, but perhaps we are not using the right search terms. If folks are aware of other threads discussing this issue, please let us know.
