Tongue piercing artefact?

Hi Neurostars community!

We have a participant who was tongue piercing, and another who was maxilofacial material from a previous dental operation. We are wondering wether we take the chance of recruiting them even though it might cause brain artefacts in various brian MRI sequences. Anybody has experience with that? With scanning fees, we dont want to recruit them if the chances are high of getting poor images.

Thanks a lot!

it’s not just about getting poor images; more important is the subject’s safety. do you have a local MRI physicist you can ask? your scanner should have people that can answer this for you and guide you. this is not really a question for a forum like this. MRI safety issues such as these come up A LOT while recruiting and scanning; you need to have reliable and educated local people to help.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Our MR technologists already cleared theses cases for safety, that is not the concern. It’s really more about getting a feel for the chances of getting artefacts in the brain. For example we have had issues with people eligible for scanning that had a dental wire, and it caused an artefact in the T1. We wanted to see if someone could have had a similar experience with a piercing or dental surgery material. But yes I will ask our MR physicist thank you.
