Uploading Surface-Based Files to NeuroVault (.mgz format)

Dear NeuroVault Team,

I am trying to upload surface-based data generated using FreeSurfer, but encountered an issue with file format compatibility. Specifically, I attempted to upload .mgz files, but they were not accepted by the platform. I also tried converting them to .mgh using mri_convert, but the upload still failed.

Could you please clarify whether NeuroVault supports either .mgz or .mgh formats? If not, is there a recommended workflow or conversion process for uploading surface-based statistical maps derived from FreeSurfer?

Any guidance on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Hi ! I forwarded this question to Ross, the maintainer of NeuroVault, and he’ll get back to you soon!

Sorry for the delay, after reviewing the code base and existing uploaded files Neurovault currently does not support .mgh/.mgz files. mri_convert should be able to convert .mgz to .nii.gz.

The site at one point had been able to use pycortex from Freesurfer to visualize volumetric data onto cortical surfaces. Looks like the call to tkregister2 that generated these images is failing right now. I’m looking into getting that running again but no promises on a timeline.
