Introduce yourself!

Hi everyone! I’m Sawan Patel (NMA_pod-174-gregarious-pillbug), an undergraduate student studying at Boston University. I’ve lived in the Boston area my whole life and am assuredly an avid New England sports fan. In my spare time, I enjoy reading up on American civil rights history, exercising, and finding new foods to cook.

I’m currently researching how head direction cells in the retrosplenial cortex integrate afferent signals from the postsubiculum and the hippocampus to differentiate between allocentric and egocentric spatial information. I am always interested in learning more about people in the neuroscience community and, to that end, would love to get in touch with anyone here at the academy. I’m looking forward to working with you all!

Hello everyone, I am Saptarshi Ghosh (please call me sapta !) I am currently a postdoc at Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Norway. My Ph.D. was on Network Science especially on Chimera state which exhibits simultaneous synchronous and asynchronous dynamics in an identically coupled non-linear system (GScholar).

It turns out that these “chimera-like” states may play a crucial role in brain dynamics which bought me to computational neuroscience for my postdoc. I am really a newcomer and hoping to learn from the NMA and following discussions in the forum.

Aside from academia, I love reading (especially SciFi), cooking, photography, and hoping to start learning the violin sometime in this life :sweat_smile:

Hi everyone,

My name is Michalis Pagkalos and I have almost completed my first year as a grad student at IMBB-FoRTH in Crete, working at the lab of Dr. Panayiota Poirazi, aka the dendrites lab.

I am currently studying, by means of computational modeling, how active dendritic mechanisms affect hippocampal learning and memory processes. Also as a side project, I am developing a python package that automates and simplifies the construction of spiking neural networks with compartmental neurons.

Hello everyone! I am Rimi (or the long version- Rimjhim); I am a PhD student at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.

I am a mathematician by education, and I switched to neuroscience couple of years ago; still very new. My current project is on the topic of neural coding, and right now we are studying the variability and randomness of spike trains, from rate coding and temporal coding perspectives; If somebody has some spontaneous activity data with enough spike trains PLEASE hit me up, we are lacking that.

Personally, I love going for movies and I love cooking and long walks. Really into reading as well. Oh and if any of you are around Prague (or want to come here for a weekend), please hit me up (Twitter: @HimmelStreet). I’d not mind making more friends.

Looking forward to NMA, since I need that to get a more well-rounded view of the field.
Have a good day.

Hi everyone!
I’m Tang, Shun-hang, currently a Ph.D student at Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Shanghai, China.
My recent projects focus on understand the role of basal ganglia in decision making and reinforcement learning. We use rodent model, head-fixed behavior task, combing with in vivo two-photon Ca imaging, optogenetics and other genetics tools to examine the underlying cognitive process.
In general, I got richer training in a biological background, weaker in neural computation or modeling. Hope to share with you and learn with you at NMA!
Best,
Shun-hang

Hi, everyone,

I am Claudio Palominos. I am interested in a number of topics from Cognition to Social Sciences. I believe that language is the tool that connects cogntion with culture and society. Currently, I am a PhD student at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Language and Translation Sciences, working on the study of narratives and looking for clinical markers of cognitive dysfunctions. My aim is to understand how these linguistic devices operate in people with different clinical populations, illuminating also the contrast with neurotypical people.

My previous training was in engineering and economics. So, I spent several years programming and doing economic data analysis; now I do text data analysis.

I am also really into writing and love cooking.

Hi everyone!
My name is Alessandro Marin Vargas. I will start my PhD in Neuroscience at the Mathis lab (EPFL) in Geneva. I graduated in Bionics Enginering at University of Pisa and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. My interest is to study the brain computation by combining Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience all together. I’m excited to develop novel AI control algorithms to understand how motor control work from a brain computation point of view but also from an engineering one. I would like to translate this research to control neuroprosthesis or to restore sensation through neuromodulation.
Besides research, my main passions are soccer, TV series, Japanese anime and guitar.
I will also attend NMA as an interactive students and I am looking forward to start this new experience!

Cheers!

Hello Guys,

This side Arhant from India. At present, I’m a Masters student at IIIT-Hyderabad, India. From the past 3 years, I’m working under Prof. Kavita Vemuri. My research is aligned with Brain strokes and its rehabilitation. Till now, I’m using values of qEEG to find possible correlation across different parts of our brain.

Lastly, I’m happy to be a part of such a diverse community. Looking forward for more interactive conversations in the upcoming days.

Hi All! I am Marta, cognitive scientist and first-year PhD student at KU Leuven. I am currently studying numerical cognition in children, specifically how do they link information about quantity to number symbols. I’ve joined the Academy because my hope is to build a new model to explain this process!

I am also into logic, philosophy of science, AI and… yoga - because it doesn’t require running

Hi everyone! I am Shuze Liu, an upcoming sophomore undergraduate. Hoping to study the neural mechanisms underlying human decision-making, I am particularly interested in the relevant insight that computational neuroscience could offer.

I wonder if continuing previous research over the neural correlates of economic concepts could enhance our understanding of the dynamical process in which the brain formulates decisions, and eventually allow accurate predictions of human behavior. Also, I wonder if constructing a theory of decision-making solely from the physical sciences could account for the emergent properties that give rise to higher mental functions, or if the computational requirements of such an approach could be met by tools in the near future. By participating in NMA, I hope to develop better insight towards these questions, and subsequently guide my future academic career.

I feel excited to join this community, and look forward to learning from you all!

Hi Y’all,

My name is Josh Krasney and I am a rising third year student at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. I work in Dr. Joseph Manns’ lab studying the ways in which emotion influences hippocampal-dependent (declarative) memory using in vivo electrophysiology and rats. I am particularly interested in the neural activity within and between the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex (PFC) during and after emotional events. Sample questions that keep me up at night: 1) How does the brain integrate emotional and contextual information during encoding? 2) What are the mechanisms by which emotion enhances memory consolidation?

I love to play sports, spend time outdoors, and play instruments. Looking forward to working together! Oh, and Go Blue!

Cheers,

Josh
